What to Do After a Facial Treatment?

Looking for guidance after a facial? Good decision. Ideally, your skin should feel silky smooth and soft after a facial, but it could also be more delicate. This is why following proper after-care is essential. It’s easy to see why skin experts view facials as routine skin maintenance, much like regular check-ups for our cars. Regular facials can help combat the negative effects of stress, the environment, and some of our daily habits on our skin. And there’s no denying the benefits of having a fresh, dewy glow and silky soft skin after a facial, not to mention the added bonus of a relaxing hour for yourself and a mini massage.

Day 1 after Facial

1. Avoid from touching or picking your skin.

It is always advisable to avoid touching your face, but it is especially important to do so after a facial. The urge to pop any blackheads or whiteheads that may appear on your face may be strong, but it is best to resist this temptation for the sake of beautiful skin. The reason your aesthetician did not remove these imperfections themselves is that the skin is more delicate after a facial. “I advise clients not to touch their skin after extractions as this can lead to irritation and possible scarring,” says Rose, a Kay’s Nail Spa esthetician. “In some cases, I may leave a lesion without extraction if it is not ready to be removed.”

2. Skip the heavy makeup and skin-care products.

After a facial, it’s best to avoid wearing heavy makeup and using skin-care products for a day or two. This is because deep cleansing during the facial can make your pores more open and susceptible to bacteria. Taking a break from makeup will also help the serums, creams, or peels applied during the facial be more effective. Don’t worry, you can resume your usual makeup routine the following day; when you do so, be sure to clean your brushes and applicators thoroughly to prevent breakouts.

3. Go easy on your face when washing it.

Your skin will be extra delicate after a facial, so handle it with care. The serums and manual handling during the facial can weaken the skin barrier, so it’s best to use gentle, moisturizing cleansers.

4. Skip the toner

It’s best to avoid using toners, especially those with alcohol or exfoliating ingredients, on your skin for a day or two after a facial as they may cause dryness or irritation. Since a facial provides a thorough cleanse, there’s no need for toner in the post-facial period as your skin’s balance has already been restored.

5. Keep out of Sauna
It is best to avoid using steam rooms or saunas after a facial treatment. Your skin has already been exposed to enough heat during the facial, and additional exposure could cause sensitivity and broken blood vessels. If using Sauna is in your routine, use them before the facial treatment.

6. Rethink that Body Massage

It’s recommended to be cautious when getting a traditional massage after a facial. The masseuse needs to be mindful and avoid any facial massages, as the skin can be sensitive after a facial treatment. It’s best to get the massage before the facial, or opt for an upright neck and back massage in a chair, to prevent the delicate post-facial skin from rubbing against the massage table.

7. Reschedule your workout

If you missed your workout before your facial treatment, it’s best to hold off for at least a day. Exercising immediately after can cause irritation and exacerbate the sensitivity of the freshly exfoliated skin, as well as increase heat and sweat. It’s recommended to work out before the appointment to give the skin time to recover.

What to do after a facial: Days 2 and 3

8. Avoid using any exfoliators or face scrubs

They can damage the skin’s protective layer and cause inflammation. As most facials already include exfoliants, whether chemical or physical, it’s best to skip any products that could irritate the skin for a few days after the treatment. Instead, opt for a mild facial cleanser.

9. Stay away from acne products and other at-home treatments.

To avoid irritating your skin after a facial, it’s best to avoid using too many products, especially those that are harsh or potentially irritating. This includes products like retinols, at-home peels, and cleansers and toners with salicylic acid, which can cause redness and inflammation. Most face masks should also be avoided, as they can irritate sensitive skin. However, hydrating masks that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, such as the HydroJelly Mask, can be a good option. If you’re not sure what products to use after a facial, it’s recommended to ask your esthetician for recommendations.

10. Stay out of the sun.

You should avoid going to the pool or beach immediately after your facial treatment due to the increased sensitivity of your skin from the exfoliation. Sun exposure can harm your skin and may cause negative reactions, so it’s best to cancel any such plans, unless you plan to protect your skin by wearing a wide-brimmed hat throughout. We suggest waiting a few days before exposing your skin to the sun, but it’s still important to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day.

11. Delay scheduling any waxing or laser treatments for your face.

Your esthetician will assess the extent of the exfoliation done on your face during the facial to determine whether it’s safe to undergo hair-removal procedures. However, as a general rule, it’s recommended to wait for at least a week. Waxing, in particular, can cause skin exfoliation, and excessive exfoliation can increase the chances of skin getting lifted during waxing, leaving behind scabs instead of well-groomed brows.
